Hello, I’m J.A. Burgess

Well, they say you need to love what you do… and boy do I love tube amps! I’m a passionate craftsman with over 30 years of experience.

Since I was around 10 years old, I have been fascinated with electricity and electronics. During elementary school, I built several projects as entries in the local science fair, including a transistor radio and a Geiger counter (vacuum tube). During my high school years, I built (from scratch) a 6-tube radio and assembled a KnightKit 6BQ5 mono integrated amp.

After high school, I completed a 6-month course in electronics. The "lab" part of this course included several projects, including a variable-output DC power supply using two 6L6 tubes and a single-ended audio amplifier using one 6L6 as the output tube.

Later that year, I "accidentally" found myself being trained as a jeweler. I was 19 at the time. I've worked as a jeweler since then and have owned my own business since 1977. Never forgetting my "first love," over the years I built electronic kits from Heathkit, Eico, etc. Most of those were solid-state.

Around 1994, I decided to concentrate on only one hobby and proceeded to build a pair of PP mono amps with 6550 output tubes. I soon built other amps and sold those mono’s on eBay. I read about low-power single-ended triode amps and had to try that. My first effort was a stereo single-ended amp using 45s in the output. After a while, I was running out of space to store amps, so I started selling the excess. Then I began to receive inquiries about building custom amps to order, and I've built quite a number for clients over the past 30 years.

Now, decades later, my “first love” has turned into a full-time gig in the Central Valley of California. I build, restore, and repair vintage and modern vacuum tube audio amplifiers, plus all kinds of audio and electronics gear. I’m meticulous, I’m creative, and I’m confident after working with me, you’ll love the sound of music even more.
